Run

Run Basics

Of the three disciplines, running is easily the most accessible for newcomers. Whether it be a weekend 5k or your local park, opportunities generally abound to both practice and compete as a runner. Running is also the discipline that most allows you to choose your own adventure. Even the experts aren’t totally on the same page on questions such as how much training should be speedwork vs distance training. Generally, as it concerns your kids, the right answer will always be whatever makes them happy to continue to show up and run. The answer to that question will often change over time. In short, whatever will have your kids running happy and consistently, do that – whether it be alone or with a group.

While you do not need a running club, it can certainly be helpful if you have one that is convenient to you. Here is the full list of High School, Middle School, and Club running squads in Florida. In addition, both the AAU and USATF have clubs throughout the state, with AAU events typically more common.

If none of these options work for you, we have compiled a Places to Run section of this website filled with free and low-cost training options. We also have some sample Run Workouts for you to try.

Places to Run

The beauty of running is that you do not need the perfect location to make it happen. Whether it be in your neighborhood, or in a public park, you don’t need a lot of time or public space to make it happen.

That said, there are some very good free and low-cost options at your disposal, which you may not know about.

Healthy Kids Running Series – Health Kids Running Series, is a 5 week running series that usually takes place in the spring and fall in multiple locations throughout the state. The emphasis generally is on wellness and improvement and there are treats, toys, and games available. Each week is timed, and children get the opportunity to try and set a PR in a low-key environment. Distances vary depending on age. The 5 week series is usually $50 or less if you register early.

ParkRun –  Originally founded in England, ParkRun is a weekly free timed 5k that occurs at various locations both in Florida and throughout the world. As their website proclaims, Park Run is free for everyone, forever. There are currently weekly 5ks near Clermont, Gainesville, Jacksonville, and St. Petersburg. Note: if you’re looking to be timed, you must print out a scannable barcode prior to showing up.

Public Tracks –

A public track is incredibly useful for structuring run workouts. Unfortunately, school security concerns often bar public access. The result is that very few middle and high school tracks are available to the public.

We have compiled a list below of places, where we know there are tracks open to the public. Generally, do not assume you will have restroom access unless otherwise noted. Please also assume all school locations will be closed during school hours, and only available after-hours.
